ZINCACE® 50 mg Tablets

Read all of this carefully before you start taking this medicine.

  • If you have any further questions, ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
  • This medicine has been prescribed for you only. Do not pass it on to others. It may harm them, even if their signs of illness are the same as yours.

1. What ZINCACE is and what it is used for

ZINCACE contains zinc acetate, which provides elemental zinc, an essential trace element required for many important functions in the body.

Zinc contributes to:

  • Normal immune system function
  • Normal wound healing
  • Normal growth and development
  • Normal sense of taste and smell
  • Normal enzyme activity

ZINCACE is used in adults and adolescents for the treatment of zinc deficiency.

2. What you need to know before you take ZINCACE

Do NOT take ZINCACE if:

  • You are allergic to zinc acetate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • You have copper deficiency.

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if:

  • You have kidney disease or impaired kidney function.
  • You are taking zinc for a long period.
  • You are taking other medicines that may interfere with zinc absorption.

Your doctor may monitor you during treatment, particularly if treatment is prolonged.

Other medicines and ZINCACE

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

ZINCACE may interact with:

  • Copper supplements
  • Tetracycline antibiotics
  • Quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, moxifloxacin and ofloxacin)
  • Calcium supplements
  • Iron supplements
  • Penicillamine
  • Trientine

If you are taking tetracycline antibiotics, they should be taken at least 3 hours apart from ZINCACE.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The safety of this medicine during pregnancy has not been established.

Zinc passes into breast milk and may cause copper deficiency in breast-fed infants. Therefore, breast-feeding should be avoided during treatment unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Driving and using machines

No studies have been performed on the effects of this medicine on the ability to drive or use machines.

3. How to take ZINCACE

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Recommended dose

One tablet once to three times daily, as directed by your doctor.

Method of administration

  • Swallow the tablet with water.
  • Zinc is preferably taken between meals.
  • If stomach upset occurs, take the tablet with food or after meals.

If you take more ZINCACE than you should

Taking too much zinc may cause:

  • Burning pain in the mouth or stomach
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach irritation
  • Ulcers
  • Serious stomach injury

Seek medical attention immediately if you have taken too many tablets.

Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a healthcare professional.

If you forget to take ZINCACE

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet.

If you stop taking ZINCACE

Do not stop taking your medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so.

4. Possible side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Common side effects may include

  • Abdominal pain
  • Stomach discomfort (dyspepsia)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Gastric irritation
  • Gastritis

Other reported side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Lethargy

Long-term use or high doses of zinc may reduce copper absorption and lead to copper deficiency.

5. How to store ZINCACE

  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Store protected from light and moisture.
  • Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date shown on the pack.
  • Do not throw medicines away via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. These measures help protect the environment.

Active substance

Each film-coated tablet contains:

  • Zinc Acetate USP (as dihydrate) equivalent to Elemental Zinc 50 mg

Other ingredients include pharmaceutical excipients.
